Semporna & Mabul Island — The World's Best Muck Diving, Reviewed

The Semporna Archipelago in eastern Sabah is one of those rare places where marine biologists and recreational divers share the same breathless superlatives. Our team of PADI Divemasters and travel specialists spent seven consecutive days diving the region's major sites — from the towering walls of Sipadan to the macro-paradise sandy flats of Mabul — to evaluate what our clients can realistically expect and how to set up the ideal itinerary around one of the planet's most productive reef systems.

Sipadan — Understanding the Permit System

Sipadan Island was declared a marine protected area in 2004. All resort accommodation on the island was removed, and a strict permit system limits diving to 120 divers per day across all operators. This is the most important practical constraint for trip planning:

Mabul — The World Capital of Muck Diving

Mabul Island is where marine photographers come on pilgrimage. The sandy, silty bottom around the island and Kapalai looks underwhelming compared to a pristine reef — but it is this very environment that supports one of the most concentrated collections of weird, rare, and beautiful critters on Earth.

We completed over 40 dives in the Semporna region over seven days. The encounter that stopped everyone mid-breath: a mimic octopus performing six different animal imitations in a single 12-minute dive on Mabul's House Reef. Extraordinary does not begin to cover it.

Confirmed macro sightings during our inspection week included: mimic octopus, blue-ringed octopus, hairy frogfish (3 colour variants), ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish, mantis shrimp (peacock and smasher variants), and a rare find — a Rhinopias scorpionfish sitting on open sand in clear view for 20 minutes.

The Bajau Sea Nomads

The cultural dimension of Semporna is inseparable from its marine identity. The Bajau Laut — the sea nomads — have lived on and from the Celebes Sea for over 1,000 years. Many have relocated to stilt villages built over the reef flat, but the knowledge of the sea they carry is extraordinary:

We are partnering with a Bajau-led cooperative to include a half-day cultural visit (stilt village, traditional fishing demonstration, seafood lunch) in all Semporna packages. Visitor fees flow directly to the cooperative's community fund.
